What is Middle Back Pain?

Middle back pain is relatively uncommon compared to upper back pain, cervical pain or lower back pain. The middle back consists of the largest portion of the back, from the shoulders to around the navel area. Pain in the middle back typically concentrates between the shoulder blades, at the center of the rib cage, or at the thoracic spine near the bottom of the rib cage.

Most of the symptoms of middle back pain are also felt by those suffering from lower back pain or upper back pain, and many people who suffer from one area of back pain also have mild mid-back pain too. Similarly, most of the treatment and management options for middle back pain are similar to those with upper and lower back pain.

If you are suffering from middle back pain that doesn’t go away after several days, consider contacting a physician for a diagnosis. You may need to develop an exercise regime, keep better posture, reduce your exertion or rest for a few days. It may be more serious, however, and you may need more complex procedures like physical therapy, acupuncture, massage, or even surgery. Contact your doctor for more information.

Causes of Middle Back Pain

Middle back pain may be caused by one of many different conditions. These include but are not limited to:

Old Age – With age, the cartilage discs between the vertebrae gradually wear away. This can lead to pinched nerves and reduced flexibility.

Injury – If you were recently injured in an automobile accident or sports accident, your spine may still be suffering from the trauma of the injury.

Herniated discs – When the discs in the spine tear and bulge, this can compress the nerves in the spine, causing inflammation and pain.

Degenerative joint disease – Joints may wear down due to genetic conditions, old age, obesity or other related conditions. Also known as osteoarthritis, this causes bones to rub against each other, causing a dull aching pain and loss of mobility.

Myofascial pain syndrome – This occurs when the connective tissues between the back muscles become inflamed. It often happens between the shoulder blades if you carry a lot of tension in your upper mid-back.

Symptoms of Middle Back Pain

The symptoms of middle back pain are similar to the symptoms of other types of back pain. Common symptoms include:

Muscle strain

Numbness

Shooting pain

Bad posture

Back injury

Weakness

Muscle spasms

Misaligned neck or lower back

Loss of mobility and flexibility

General fatigue

If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, try to relax for a few days and be sure to stretch and do gentle exercises. If the back pain doesn’t go away, schedule a visit with your physician as soon as possible.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Middle Back Pain

Middle back pain is relatively easy to diagnose. However, the cause of mid-back pain may be more difficult to understand. If your mid-back continues to hurt after several days to weeks of rest and home care, you should seek medical advice about your condition. You may need hospital treatment or surgery. Your doctor will likely need to do an X-ray, MRI or CT scan to determine the full extent of your spinal condition.

In most cases, middle back pain can be treated at home. By engaging in a light exercise regimen, stretching and self-awareness of your posture, you can go a long way toward reducing pain. Over-the-counter medications can also help as can ice and heat therapy with home-made or store-bought ice and heat packs. A gentle massage may also help solve the problem.

Contact a physician today if you are concerned about chronic middle back pain and its effects on your health.

Between each of the vertebrae of the human spine are discs. These discs prevent the vertebrae from rubbing against each other, allowing the spine to be flexible. They also provide support for the vertebrae. However, like bones, these spinal discs deteriorate with age.

In some people, the deterioration is more severe. This is known as spondylosis or spinal osteoarthritis, commonly referred to as degenerative disc disease. Degenerative disc disease is most common in adults over the age of 30, and can cause a wide range of symptoms.

Symptoms

Not every case of degenerative disc disease is the same. Because the discs deteriorate in different places and at different rates, the pain caused by this condition is different for every person. Common symptoms of degenerative disc disease include:

Stiffness, loss of flexibility

Tingling or numbness

Inflammation of the spine

Bone spurs

As frustrating as these symptoms can be, most can be treated through non-surgical methods. The important thing is to get your spine inspected early before the disease begins to disrupt your life.

Diagnosis

Degenerative disc disease is primarily diagnosed through medical imaging, such as a CT scan, an MRI or an X-ray. These tests can reveal deformities in the spine such as shrinkage in certain areas, bone spurs or other abnormalities, and areas where there is more pressure on the nerves or spinal cord. A diagnosis and treatment plan can be developed based on the results of the medical imaging.

Treatments

Since each condition is different, exact treatment programs will be different. However, there are several avenues of treatment that have proven helpful in cases of degenerative disc disease:

Physical Therapy: To help restore flexibility and strength to your spine, physical therapy may be recommended. Treatment may also involve a behavioral portion, designed to teach you better working and movement habits.

Spinal Traction: This stretching technique is recommended in cases where the nerves are being compressed by the shrinking vertebrae.

Medicines: Painkillers, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed to assist patients with managing their pain.

Alternative Treatments: Acupuncture, behavioral modification therapy, deep tissue massage and yoga have shown to help patients manage their condition. These can be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment.

Surgery: The symptoms and the progression of the disease will determine whether surgeries such as discectomy, percutaneous disc compression or spinal fusion are necessary. Surgery is usually considered a last resort for degenerative disc disease.

Early diagnosis and treatment can make degenerative disc disease manageable so those who suffer from the disease are able to maintain a normal lifestyle. Make an appointment with your physician to reach a diagnosis and discuss possible solutions to relieve the pain.

Spondylosis is a back pain condition in which the spine experiences degeneration. Common symptoms include pain and weakness of the back, which are typically caused by pressure placed on the nerve root. Spondylosis can arise due to a number of factors, including existing arthritic conditions, straining from certain types of activities, or poor posture.

The term spondylosis is also sometimes used to describe a host of degenerative spine conditions rather than a singular condition. Some physicians use it to describe a form of spinal stenosis, while others may employ it as a general, overarching term for osteoarthritis. In order to be diagnosed with spondylosis, additional information about the specific form of pain should accompany the prognosis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (which may be incorrectly referred to as ankylosing spondylosis) is an inflammatory condition involving the hip joints and the spine. It has a greater preponderance for adult males. It should be noted that spondylosis deformans is not a real medical diagnosis in humans; spondylosis deformans is the term used for dogs that are affected with such arthritic changes in the backbone.

Symptoms of Spondylosis

Symptoms can differ depending on the area where the pain exists. Cervical spondylosis symptoms may include:

Neck pain

Strained muscles around shoulders

Resistance to movement

Lumbar spondylosis refers to pain and degeneration in the lower back. Symptoms may include:

Pain in the back or neck, particularly in movement

Tingling sensation down arms and legs

Muscle weakness

How is Spondylosis Diagnosed?

Spondylosis is typically diagnosed through an evaluation of your medical history and a physical examination. Imaging tests may also be administered for a more detailed insight. A combination of the medical history, physical exam, MRI, X-ray imaging, and genetic blood markers can likely produce the best answers in determining whether your spine is being affected by spondylosis or any similar conditions.

Treatment for Spondylosis

Treatment for spondylosis typically involves beginning with conservative methods, such as physical therapy, over the counter pain medication, and minor lifestyle modifications. For chronic forms of spondylosis, pain management methods should be approved by the physician. This can include chiropractic treatment or decompressive therapies. As a last resort, surgery can also be done to relieve symptoms, but even then, the relief of back pain may not be resolved completely.

To find what sort of treatment options you have in getting rid of spondylosis or other similar conditions, make an appointment with your physician to receive a confirmed diagnosis.

Between the vertebrae in the spine are soft discs that prevent the bones from rubbing against each other. They also allow the spine to be flexible and strong by acting as shock absorbers for the twisting and turning that the spine does every day.

As we grow older, these soft discs gradually harden, making our spines less flexible and more prone to injury. When too much pressure is put on the disc, the outer layer bulges. This is called a bulging disc.

Alone, a bulging disc is not necessarily a debilitating condition, but it can be painful. However, it should be treated immediately before it becomes herniated. In some instances, a bulging disc can put pressure on the nerves in the spine, causing a great deal of pain. If the bulging disc continues adding pressure to the nerves, damage can result.

Medical imaging, such as a CT scan, MRI or X-ray, can help identify bulging discs. Your physician should review the symptoms and determine if medical imaging is necessary to determine if there is a bulging disc or other back problem.

Symptoms

Sometimes bulging discs go unnoticed because they are not pressing on nerves or otherwise causing pain. However, the majority of people with bulging discs experience some sort of pain.

The symptoms produced vary based on where the bulging disc is located.

Tingling and numbness in the fingers, hands, arms, shoulders and neck.

Weakness or pain in the toes, feet, legs, and buttocks

Gastrointestinal problems (incontinence)

Chest pain

Sciatica

Treatments

Some bulging disc conditions eventually heal without extreme treatment methods beyond behavioral, occupational or physical therapy. However, sometimes the condition is more complex and needs further treatment methods to manage the pain and relieve the pressure of the disc. Such treatments can include the following:

Medicines such as anti-inflammatories and pain killers

Ice and heat therapy

Cortisone injections

Mild exercises

Surgery

Bulging discs should not be ignored. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can relieve the pain and help release the pressure on the disc. It is important to seek an evaluation from a doctor if you suspect of having a bulging disc. The doctor can develop an appropriate treatment plan to get you on track to a pain-free back

About Neck Pain

Also known medically as cervical pain, neck pain is a common condition that many people go through regularly in their lives. Although not as common as back pain, people experiencing neck pain can have real issues that hinder them from doing daily activities. Whether it’s difficulty turning the neck, or feeling a dull tenderness right above the spine, neck pain is a common condition that can mostly be remedied from home.

More than 60% of people experience neck pain at some point in their lives. Typically, it occurs when a serious accident or sudden injury has been suffered, like a car accident. Fortunately, only 10% of these cases end up becoming chronic neck pain issues or in need of surgical assistance. Otherwise, the occasional sore neck and other neck pain symptoms are regularly experienced through life, with most not needing serious treatment.

Back and neck pain are sometimes even linked together. As both areas rely on the spinal cord to sense nerves and provide structural support, pain in one area could easily lead to symptoms in the other. Spinal stenosis, or narrowing of the spine, can create enough compression on the spinal nerves to the point where neck pains can be sensed.

Neck Pain Conditions

There are few conditions directly tied to neck pain. More often than not, there are more conditions that lead to severe neck pain rather than form them. In any case, the most common neck pain conditions typically result in a ruptured disc and similar conditions.

Ruptured discs are a common condition of the lower back that can occasionally occur around the cervical area, or the neck. A ruptured disc is when the outer layer of an intervertebral disc is torn and the inner shock-absorbing substance begins to leak. This may cause compression on the nerves and create pain.

Other names for a ruptured disc include a slipped disc, cervical slipped disc, and herniated disc.

Treating Neck Pain

In most cases, neck pain symptoms can be remedied through medication, physical therapy, or alternative treatments. Acupuncture has been a frequently used treatment on neck pain, as it targets specific pressure points to relieve pain.

For chronic neck pain that cause shooting pain up and down the body, numbing of arms and hands, or a shift in bladder patterns will need to be inspected by a certified physician before treatment is undergone. In very rare cases, chronic neck pain leads to needing surgery.

To verify your symptoms and obtain a conclusive answer to your neck pain worries, schedule an appointment with your physician, particularly if the pain doesn’t go away after a few weeks. An imaging test may be taken, but otherwise, a full-body check up should be able to determine neck pain conditions effectively.

Back pain symptoms can indicate a variety of conditions depending on where the pain is located and what your lifestyle habits are. Below are some of the common symptoms of back pain experienced in different areas of the back:

Pain felt during heavy lifting

Muscle aches

Sharp pain near the hips or directly above the tail bone

Radiating or tingling pain felt through the buttocks and back of legs

Inability to stand without spasms occurring

Pain around the shoulder blades and rib cage while stretching or heavy lifting

Chronic pain after sitting or standing for extended periods of time

Pain around the shoulders or lower portion of neck connected to the spine

Some back pain symptoms may simply apply all over and extend from multiple locations. To learn more about back pain symptoms in particular areas of the body and why they occur, read on to find more information on:

Lower back pain

Middle back pain

Upper back pain

Neck pain

Radicular pain

Lumbar pain

Cervical pain

Muscle pain and weaknesses

How to Treat Back Pain Symptoms

Depending on the location and severity of your back pain symptoms, various treatments are available to do on your own or through professionals. For the most part, relief from back pain is taken in two steps: pain relief and improved movement and flexibility.

For pain removal, heat and cold therapy, intense massage sessions, and anti-inflammatory medication are all ways to get rid of pain directly. Sustainable habits that improve back pain over an extended period of time include exercise, mindfulness of posture, and avoidance of strenuous movements and sports.

As always, you should speak with your physician to correctly diagnose your back pain symptoms, as well as recommend treatment for resolving your back pain in a healthy and long-lasting way.

Discs of cartilage act as cushions between the vertebrae or bones in the spine. These cushions are known as intervertebral discs. When a disc is herniated, some of its soft center, the nucleus pulposus, has pushed through its tough exterior. The formal medical term for this condition is “herniated nucleus pulposus” or HNP.

A herniated nucleus pulposus has the potential to irritate nerves, thereby causing pain, numbness or weakness in a limb. A person experiencing any of these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately. However, many people with herniated discs experience no symptoms. In most cases, a slipped disc does not require surgery. Slipped disc treatment can be as simple as performing herniated disc exercises alone or with a physical therapist.

When reading about HNP, herniated disc symptoms and related topics, you’ll probably see several interchangeable terms and spellings. Herniated discs are sometimes called “slipped discs” or “ruptured discs” in common parlance. You might also read about cervical disc herniation, which relates to the vertebrae in the upper spine. Cervical disc herniation might be remembered as “herniated disc in neck.” Lumbar disc herniation, meanwhile, refers to a protrusion in the lower spine.

Also, the spelling “disk” is correct, but “disc” is most common.

Symptoms of Disk Herniation

It is possible to have a herniated disk but experience no symptoms. Ruptured disks are sometimes only detected when X-rays are taken for other purposes. However, a ruptured disk can also be very painful or cause numbness or weakness.

First, pain and numbness can result from nerves being affected directly by the hernia. Second, weaknesses can result when the muscles associated with those nerves are affected. This weakness might be seen in a person stumbling or being unable to hold or lift items as they normally would.

The location of pain, numbness or weakness varies with the location of the slipped disk on the spine; different discs affect different nerves and associated muscles. Most slipped disks occur in the lower back or lumbar region of the spine. These types of herniated disk can affect the buttocks, legs and feet. In contrast, if a cervical (neck) disk ruptures, it might be sensed in the shoulders and/or arms.

Herniated disc symptoms might be especially intense when a person coughs, sneezes or moves the spine a certain way.

How is a Herniated Disc Diagnosed?

Lumbar or cervical disc herniation is rarely caused by a single event. Rather, it results from gradual degeneration. Part of this degeneration can be expected with aging; spinal discs naturally lose some of their moisture content and flexibility as a person becomes older. People sometimes exacerbate natural wear and tear by using their back muscles instead of their leg muscles to lift heavy objects.

People who sense sharp pain up and down the back of legs and back are commonly diagnosed with a herniated disc, particularly if the pain is chronic. Other signs of ruptured or leaking discs include soreness in particular spot.

Herniated Disc Treatment

Herniated disc treatment can be very conservative and low-cost. In most cases, a person need only perform exercises, use ice or heat therapy, and avoid putting their spine in certain positions. Slipped disc symptoms might then disappear within one or two months.

In some cases, disc herniation patients are advised to take heavy over-the-counter pain medications containing acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen. A drawback to this is the potential for liver damage. Even stronger pain medication in the form of narcotics (e.g., hydrocodone) may be prescribed if the pain is intense. In addition to potentially causing liver damage, these drugs can cause confusion, sedation, nausea and constipation.

If symptoms of herniation do not subside with six weeks, a doctor might recommend cortisone injections. Cortisone injections suppress inflammation in the area surrounding spinal nerves.

A final option for treatment is surgery, but it is very rarely recommended. It is most often performed when slipped disc symptoms last more for six weeks, when a person has intense pain, or when a person is unable to walk. A herniated disc surgery is almost always necessary when a vertebra is fractured.

Herniated disc surgery usually requires removing only the protruding section of the disc. However, sometimes an entire intervertebral disc must be removed. It might be replaced with artificial cartilage. If no artificial disc is added, then the adjacent vertebrae will likely be fused together during surgery to keep the spine stable. As always speak with your doctor before embarking on any treatment methods independently and to make sure that the condition you are experiencing is indeed due to a herniated disk in the spine.

Back pain is a common condition that affects 8 out of 10 people at some point in their lives. Whether from injuries, bad posture, or aging, back problems are widely experienced by people on a regular basis. As such, there are a breadth of factors that can cause backache and severe back pain in everyday life and sometimes over longer periods of time. Accidents, injuries, muscular and nerve issues, aging, and stress are only some of the causes of back problems and their symptoms.

Symptoms of a Backache

Some of the common symptoms of back problems include:

Muscle aches: This includes soreness around the shoulders, hips, or around the rib cage. Muscle aches are often caused by strenuous activity from sports or other physically-demanding activities. It can also occur from sitting too long in the same position or from bad posture.

Sharp pain: A sudden, sharp pain can sometimes occur around the lower back as well as form muscle spasms. These are often experienced sporadically in various parts of the body.

Radiating pain: This can be identified by pain that starts in one location and spreads to other areas upon movement. Leg pain can sometimes be caused by radiating sensations from lower back problems.

Difficulty standing and sitting: If you’re having difficulty standing for short amounts of time or experiencing a strain on the lower back when sitting, it is definitely a sign of bigger back problems.

Chronic pain: Bad back pain that lasts for more than 3 months can be considered chronic. These need to be addressed by a physician or certified pain specialist in order to receive treatment and prevent them from becoming something worse.

Common Conditions of Back Problems

Sore backs and spine pain can lead to several back pain conditions. The most common include:

Arthritis

Bone spurs

Bulging disc

Herniated discs

Sciatica

Degenerative disc disease

Facet syndrome

Spondyloitis

Spinal stenosis

Torn disc

Diagnosing Back Problems

Most forms of back pain tend to disappear after a few days. These include a sore back, back strain, or backache. Making adjustments in posture, exercise routine, and activities are usually the best ways to remedy most back problems and eventually overcome them.

Severe back pain, particularly spine pain or other bad back pain, could indicate larger underlying issues that should be verified by a certified physician. In most cases, an imaging test such as an MRI, CT scan, or X-ray, is conducted to determine the root cause. Depending on the results, treatment is then recommended. This could be as simple as using heating and cooling packs on the affected area, or in rare cases, lead to surgery. The only way to know for sure is to speak with a physician and receive testing for definitive answers to your back pain problems.

Spondylolisthesis is a serious and painful disorder of the spine characterized by a displaced vertebra that puts pressure on the surrounding nerves, tissues and vertebrae. This spinal condition can be debilitating if the pressure is severe or the position of the vertebra prevents normal movement of the spine. Spondylolisthesis has a number of causes, including:

• Stress fractures

• Arthritis

• Infections

• Injuries and accidents

• Deterioration due to age or overuse

• Congenital birth defects

Depending on the location of the displaced vertebra, patients typically experience symptoms that include:

• Severe back pain

• Stiffness or immobility

• Pain in the buttocks or legs

• Difficulty in standing, sitting or walking normally

• Numbness or weakness in the legs or hips

• Increased pain when turning, bending or moving

• Decreased control of bladder and bowels

Most patients experience one or more of these symptoms. In rare cases, spondylolisthesis may not produce any noticeable symptoms at all.

Diagnosing Spondylolisthesis

X-rays are generally used to diagnose spondylolisthesis and can help doctors pinpoint the source of the pain and the problem. While the displaced vertebra is usually easy to identify, determining the reason for the displacement may require the use of CT scans or MRI imaging techniques. These advanced imaging systems can provide valuable information to physicians and other medical personnel in making a diagnosis and deciding on a treatment plan for patients with spondylolisthesis.

Non-surgical Treatments for Spondylolisthesis

Patients diagnosed with spondylolisthesis are often advised to avoid strenuous physical activity. Over-the-counter medication may help to relieve pain and inflammation, but some patients may require prescription medications to control their pain effectively. Depending on the severity of the displacement, physicians may adopt a conservative approach that combines pain management and reduced activity. This strategy is intended to give the spine time to heal. Anti-inflammatory and pain relief medications may also be injected directly into the affected area to provide more effective control of back pain when other methods have failed. Some patients with spondylolisthesis can benefit from physical therapy sessions to relax and strengthen the muscles of the back. A back brace may be recommended to provide extra support.

Surgical Techniques

If spondylolisthesis does not respond to conservative treatments, it may be necessary to perform surgery to correct the displacement of the vertebra and relieve the pressure on tissues, other bones, and nerves in and around the spinal column. Spinal fusion and decompressive laminectomy are the most common types of surgeries performed to treat spondylolisthesis.

• Spinal fusion uses bone graft technology and advanced surgical techniques to fuse two vertebrae together, holding both in place and creating a new bone structure that prevents the displaced vertebra from returning to its misaligned state. This surgical procedure stabilizes the spine but may reduce mobility and flexibility in the affected area.

• Decompressive laminectomy removes a portion of the displaced vertebra to relieve pressure and pain at the site. This procedure can often provide significant pain relief for patients suffering from spondylolisthesis.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques can allow faster recovery times for patients who undergo these procedures.

In all cases of chronic or severe back pain, it is essential to seek the advice of a qualified medical professional. Early detection is often the key to full recovery, so individuals who suspect they may have spondylolisthesis or any other spinal disorder should consult a physician for diagnosis and treatment.

Lower Back Pain Treatment: What are Your Options?

Lower back pain is an ailment that affects a large number of people at some point in their lives. The pain is due to a number of things including overuse, traumatic injury, degeneration, obesity and more. The cause of the pain is often helpful in determining the best treatment.
Acute or Chronic?

Pain lasting less than 3 months is usually categorized as acute. This is easier to treat and easier to get rid of. As soon as you feel the pain, you should consider low back pain treatment. For acute instances, this would include heat before activity and ice afterwards. The use of over the counter pain and anti-inflammatory medications would be appropriate. There are a number of ways to protect your back from further pain. Be aware of your body at all times. Self-massaging the area with a tennis ball can be helpful. Lower back pain treatment can often be done from the comfort of your home.

Staying active through the pain is important. Take it easy, but don’t stop all activity, as this can cause the pain to worsen. Your muscles still need to move to help the body heal itself. If the pain persists, seeing a doctor would be the next step.

Once the pain reaches the chronic stage, you will need to find more aggressive with your treatment. If you make a visit to the doctor, you will most likely get an X-ray to determine if there are any problems with the bones in your back. If this is inconclusive an MRI may be ordered. The MRI uses magnets to take a better picture of what is going on. From here, the doctor will be able to determine your ailment and will prescribe lower back pain treatment. Depending on what they doctor determines, this may include physical therapy, prescription medication or modifying activity. If obesity is a factor in your pain, the doctor may tell you to lose weight.
What’s Best For You?

If you are struggling with pain, you may want to seek out lower back pain treatment. In the acute phases of low back pain, most of the treatment can be done at home, but if these options fail, you may need to visit a doctor. The doctor will use a few devices in an attempt to diagnose your pain. After the doctor determines the cause he will prescribe a lower back pain treatment plan for you to follow
